GIFT OF SAFE WATER (GSW)

Access to safe drinking water remains a major challenge for families living in urban slums. Many of the expectant women and mothers of premature babies supported by Mama Tulia cannot afford the costs associated with obtaining clean water, such as purchasing charcoal for boiling and containers for storage. As a result, many rely on untreated water from wells and taps, exposing themselves and their babies to waterborne diseases.

Since 2021, Mama Tulia has implemented the Gift of Safe Water (GSW) program in Kampala and Kasese, with a special focus on mothers from Namuwongo, one of Kampala's largest and most underserved informal settlements. Poor housing, inadequate sanitation, flooding, and the absence of proper waste disposal systems place families at a high risk of illness and disease.To address this challenge, Mama Tulia provides Purifaaya water filters to vulnerable mothers. These filters use natural ceramic filtration technology to remove impurities and harmful bacteria, providing safe drinking water that has been tested and approved by the Ugandan Ministry of Water and Environment and the Rwanda Standards Board.Access to safe water is especially important for premature babies and their mothers, whose health is often more vulnerable to infections. By providing water filters, we help families reduce their risk of illness, lower household expenses, and improve their overall wellbeing.Since the program began, Mama Tulia has distributed:

8 filters in 2021, 21 filters in 2022, 50 filters in 2023, 75 filters in 2024,80 filters in 2025.A total of 234 mothers and their families have benefited from the program. We have seen significant improvements in the health and wellbeing of both mothers and babies, demonstrating the life-changing impact that reliable access to safe drinking water can have. As Mama Tulia continues to support the most vulnerable families, particularly mothers of premature babies living in fragile settings, the Gift of Safe Water program remains a vital intervention for giving babies a healthier start in life.
